Lost & Lost

There he sat on the ruins of yesterday,
For the bombs today had come and gone,
Holding on tight to the body of his father,
Who’d once sung him a song.

He’d told him of the paradise,
That his beloved city once was,
Of tales of artists and musicians,
When loudness meant applause.

He looked around at the shattered ruins,
With a confused state of mind,
“For the gains of land and the gains of men,
What have they left behind?”

The pavements that once occupied,
Fruit sellers and coffee shops,
Today laid ridden with his watery eyes,
And his father’s rotting corpse.

He tried to hold himself together,
But when the dust had cleared,
He saw it all come back to life,
What his heart had always feared.

Some want freedom, some want control,
Some are just happy to pretend,
His only wish is for the bombs to stop,
For this fighting to come to an end.
