A Heart’s Desire

Today again, she set his heart on fire
With an unachievable aim, a distant pale desire
A dream that had flown far away
Was alit again, with a wailing ire

He quenched this thought, with a burning rage
Threw it back into its cursed cage
Drowned his eyes in the waters of his sorrow
And with a trembling voice, he took to the stage

He sang a melody so powerful, so deep
Said his heart was hers, to forever keep
For his world belonged in those tender eyes
The sight of which now makes him weep

The show was over, the lights were gone
He stood there alone, from dusk till dawn
One by one he watched the stars fade away
The Sun had come up, the Moon had to move on

He looked for his heart, but could not find
Pieces of it were all that she left behind
So he picked them up, and stitched a new
But love for him couldn’t be redefined

For the love was gone with the pieces she took
It was hers to keep, in an old rusty book
His love was hers, and hers forever
From the moment it flowed down his heart’s brook

So he sat down there, and penned his heart’s desire
Hung it out to dry, on a broken twisty wire
Let the streams flow down their old beloved path
Then picked it back up, and set his world on fire
