The Man and the Rain

He looked hard and long as the rain poured outside. His heart was thumping rapidly against his chest with each falling drop. His story had ended, and there was nothing he could do about it. The memories played like a film in front of his broken vacant eyes, as he just stood there, looking at the drops that were stuck to the glass of his room’s window. The drops attached to each other and began moving down, taking in every other drop they could along the way. Just like the pain inside him, which kept building up until that day when it finally came out in tears. With that, it started pouring inside too. The skies saw this and felt envious at the magnificence of his rain, for his clouds were darker than theirs and with each falling drop, they grew darker still. His life had become like a pack of cards, the faces kept changing but the design at the back of the cards remained the same. That design was the face of that woman, the woman whom he loved with so much heart that there was none left with him to call his own, and with each falling drop of those tears, it was only getting washed away towards her more and more. It rained a lot that night. He was tired of holding back those waters for so long that when the floodgates finally burst open, it drowned the whole world around him. He walked down the memory lane, drenched in those waters, and that is when he saw her standing there, beautiful as always. He wished to just touch her once more, to just hold her in his arms for one last time and tell her that he loved her, that he’ll always love her, because memories may fade away, time may bring different things in their lives, but she will remain the one constant island in this huge ever-changing ocean that life is. Their story might have ended but the book that they wrote together over the many years, will always be read with this rain in his eyes and love in his heart. There are many things he wishes he could tell her, but then again, she is a memory now, and memories don’t speak back to you.

So he talks to the rain and the rain talks back
Sharing stories of heartbreaks and pain
Of broken promises and broken souls
Of an unfinished love, that will always remain
